The Joint Commission recently issued Sentinel Event Alert #42 to bring some focus to the risk inherent in implenting new technology at the point of care. Many healthcare IT projects fail because the technology is "thrown in" without redefining departmental policy, exceptions handling, workflow, and staff training. Hopefully this added focus from the Joint Commission will clarify the need for a comprehensive approach to technology adoption in health care.
