Medicine has entered the B-17 phase...

That quote is from a great New Yorker article written by Atul Gawande.  It was published a little over a year ago, but the airline crash and exemplary performance from the pilot this week brought the analogy mentioned in this article back in to focus.

B-17 Flying Fortress

Aviation changed drastically around the time the B-17 came out, because airplanes were quickly becoming "too much plane for one man to fly".   The Army quickly developed checklists and other simple tools to help manage the complexity and occasional chaos that goes on in the cockpit.

With today's litigous society, the drive for eHealth, and the economic crisis driving pressure to reduce costs, US  healthcare has reached the "B-17 phase."
